We all have that friend who shares great books, podcasts, blogs…you know who I’m talking about. For me, this friend is Mandy. Mandy and I have known each other since the first semester of our freshman year of college. Since we graduated, we’ve never lived closer than 3.5 hours away from each other. Right now, she’s so far away it’s a 5-hour time difference! BUT, through the miracle of technology we’ve always remained close.
Mandy shares so many podcasts and book recommendations that I have honestly asked her if she gets more hours in the day than the rest of us! While cleaning one day, I was binging one of her podcast recommendations when I heard something like “if you missed the episode about photo organizing, go back and listen because it was fantastic.” Well, as a photo geek, I needed to hear anything and everything about photo organizing, so I queued it up. The episode featured Miss Freddy, the incredibly talented photo organizer guru! I didn’t even wait for the episode to finish to look her up, follow her on all the socials and click through EVERYTHING she had to offer! I couldn’t believe that someone made a living doing this!
I shared with my family and immediately heard “you should do that!” And of course I was like “yeah…but how do you actually do that? How does one get started?”
A few hours later, I was waiting for one of my kids in the school parking lot (we’ve all been there, right?) when I saw an update from Miss Freddy reminding everyone that the deadline to apply for her mentorship program was the next day. WAIT! WHAT?? I shared the details of the beta-round mentoring program with my husband when I got home and he said “Go for it! What do you have to lose?” So I did. I filled out the application, about 24 hours after first learning of Miss Freddy, in hopes of making the cut. I was SO nervous! What was I thinking? My husband and Mandy reassured me that the timing was kismet. If it is meant to be, it will be. (You know all the things people say.)
The next week, I got a confirmation email that I was chosen! The 12-week course challenged me in so many ways and reminded me how much I enjoy being challenged. I met some incredible women who are still available to problem solve and share ideas with.
Sometimes, we just have to jump in and trust that even if the water isn’t warm, we’ll adjust.
Oh…and it’s also a reminder to listen to the podcasts your friend shares! You never know what turn your life will take 🙂
